In our opinion, the mark of a great chef is when they can transform the commonplace into something extraordinary. That’s exactly what Chef Shiho Yoshikawa from Sweet Rose Creamery has done with the new soft serve flavors we’re serving exclusively at our El Segundo location at The Point starting today, and we’re so excited that we get to be part of it!

We are now serving Chocolate Custard, Vanilla Bean Gelato, and (of course) a swirl of the two together! Chocolate and Vanilla are the most basic ice cream flavors out there, but just take one bite of Sweet Rose Creamery’s version and we think you’ll agree that Chef Shiho has come up with something really special. Purity of flavor and a ridiculously creamy texture shine through from the Clover Organic Farms dairy, Chino Family Farms organic eggs, 72% Guittard chocolate, and hand-scraped vanilla beans.

Born in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture, Chef Shiho grew up making ceramics with her graphic designer father and cooking with her mother. She went on to study visual art for many years before taking culinary classes at City College of San Francisco and graduating from the San Francisco Baking Institute in 2003. She then went on to work at the Bay Area’s acclaimed Tartine Bakery for five years, where she met and worked alongside Pastry Chef Zoe Nathan.

After stints as a baking instruction video contractor, a pastry cook at The Slanted Door, a bread consultant at The Commissary, and a frozen yogurt consultant at Miam Miam Lounge, Chef Shiho reunited with Chef Zoe and her husband/business partner Josh Loeb when they requested Shiho’s assistance on recipe development for the opening of Huckleberry Café & Bakery in Santa Monica. When Josh and Zoe launched Sweet Rose Creamery in 2010, it was a natural choice for them to invite Shiho to head the dessert kitchen and bring her years of experience along with her artist’s eye to create a boutique ice cream experience.
